Afghanistan

Asked if the Prime Minister was confident that the majority of people in this country were convinced of the case for staying in Afghanistan, and the sacrifices that entailed, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister was convinced that staying in Afghanistan was the right thing to do. This was a country that had suffered from 30 years of conflict and neglect, it was a country that if we were to leave the forces of the Taliban unchecked, would be a source of major instability both globally and that would directly affect the UK, as we had seen in relation to a number of terrorist plots which had originated in that part of the world.

Asked to summarise the message to people who wanted to know when British troops would be able to leave Afghanistan, the PMS replied that we had been making progress in Afghanistan, but there was a great deal to do, and this would take time.
