Yemen

Put that there had been reports of Royal Marines on standby to help evacuate British civilians, the PMS replied that this was a routine military deployment to the region and we would not want to comment on their operations. On Yemen in particular, we were deeply concerned about what was taking place there.

The PMS said that the security situation had been volatile and unsafe for a number of months, which was why the FCO had advised against all but essential travel to the country since March 2009. Since March this year we had been advising British nationals who remained in Yemen to leave without delay.

Asked if British ships in the area could be used to rescue foreign nationals, the PMS said that he would not get into further details about what the marines were doing. Our approach throughout had been to encourage people to leave the country.

On how many UK nationals were still in Yemen, the PMS replied that he did not have precise numbers to give out; there were certainly a significant number of dual-nationals in that country.
