Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with Mervyn King that he lacked experience for the job, the PMS said that he had made clear on Monday that he would not get into commenting on leaked documents and that remained the case.
Asked if the Prime Minister had confidence in Mervyn King, the PMS said that the issue of confidence didn’t arise.
Asked if the Prime Minister thought that Mervyn King was doing a good job, the PMS said yes.
Asked if the Prime Minister thought Mervyn King stayed the right side of the line in terms of getting involved in politics, the PMS said that the Governor of the Bank of England made lots of statements on economic policy, as you would expect.
Asked if Mervyn King’s contract would be renewed in 2013, the PMS said that the Governor of the Bank of England held the position for two terms; Mervyn King’s contract had been renewed once already.
