Hedge Fund

Asked if the Prime Minister phoned the Spanish Prime Minister to discuss the Hedge Fund Directive, the PMS said there had been some developments on this and the postponement had been confirmed. The Chancellor had said: we couldn’t sign up to something which would have the effect of excluding firms from Europe’s single market . The Prime Minister does speak to Prime Minister Zapatero as part of a regular pattern of contact and the most important thing is that we have made our views clear on the details of this, and we think it was the right outcome.
Asked if the Prime Minister was disappointed this issue won’t be resolved this side of the General Election, the PMS said the Prime Minister thinks it was important that the right amount of time was put into it. It was worth remembering it was not just the UK that had concerns about it, there were a number of other countries that had concerns about the detail and more time is needed.
