High Speed Rail
« Greece | Back to most recent briefing | Rugby »
Asked if Lord Adonis’s remarks on High Speed Rail were at odds with the suspension of Intercity trains, the PMS replied that that was not for him to comment on. This was about the big infrastructure picture for the UK; we had a patchwork Network Rail network which had evolved over time and there was an opportunity to have a major new infrastructure approach which could deliver high-speed rail. The Government had always been committed to investing in the rail network where appropriate.
Asked why it had taken the Government 13 years to address this, the PMS said it was partly a matter of prioritisation and deciding when it became beneficial. The Secretary of State had emphasised that it became more beneficial to make the big step than to continue the process of mending and repairing.
