The Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) added that the Prime Minister had spoken to President Obama the previous evening. The Prime Minister began by congratulating the President on his achievements in his first year in office.
The call covered several issues on their shared agenda including Haiti, Afghanistan and climate change.
On Haiti, the Prime Minister welcomed the United States’ significant response in support of the Haitian people, and outlined the UK contribution. They agreed that strong co-ordination of international assistance would be vital going forward. On Afghanistan, the leaders looked ahead to the London Conference, which should cover both the civilian and military strategies for the campaign. The Prime Minister and the President also agreed that the climate change agenda following Copenhagen would remain a shared priority.
Asked if the Prime Minister had discussed the counter terrorism and Detroit bomb plot with President Obama, the PMS said they had discussed a range of issues, which included ongoing co-operation in the fight against terrorism.
