The PMS said that Lord Adonis issued a further statement yesterday afternoon which sets out the latest position. We continued to experience exceptional weather conditions – the current cold weather was the most prolonged spell of freezing conditions across the UK since December 1981. It was essential that we all worked together to keep Britain moving through the worst period of cold weather we have experienced for twenty-nine years.
Lord Adonis chaired a Ministerial meeting of The Civil Contingencies Committee yesterday morning and the Salt Cell convened yesterday, their second meeting, and agreed the next allocation for prioritisation of Salt supplies. It was important that we continue to take all possible steps to maximise the production of salt from our principal suppliers and were expecting significant additional imports later this month.
Asked when the salt imports from Spain and the US would arrive, the PMS said that the anticipation was that they would be here by the end of the month.
