Asked if enough salt was getting through, the PMS replied that the situation was being discussed by the Salt Cell today. The Highways Agency went into this period of bad weather with 13 days worth of supplies. What we had seen was some local authorities had more salt than others, but a process had been going on whereby local authorities had been exchanging salt between them. We were also importing salt from Spain and the US. The PMS said that supplies had depleted and now it was a question of conserving the supplies that we had. It was not for the Government to distribute the salt; this was the responsibility of the local authorities. Put that Andrew Adonis had said that there would be further measures on salt conservation other than the 25% talked about previously, the PMS said that when the Salt Cell had met it was possible that further measures would be put in place. Asked where the 244million came from, the PMS replied that he thought it was the departmental budget but he would check. Asked whether the UK was potentially self-sufficient when it came to supplies of salt, the PMS said that in normal circumstances we would consider ourselves self-sufficient. Such a severe winter was a one in 29 year event, so people should expect that during these extreme weather conditions there could be a strain on our supplies of salt. We were taking the necessary measure both in rationing salt and finding external supplies. Briefing took place at 10:00 | Search for related news Original PMOS briefings are © Crown Copyright.
