Climate Change

Asked where the money announced this morning to tackle climate change came from, the PMS said that the money announced this morning for the fast track climate change fund would come from the Department for International Development’s (DfID) budget, which was set out in the PBR.

Asked if it was additional money, the PMS said that it was from an existing budget.

Asked if the figure announced this morning was the same as the figure the Prime Minister had announced at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting last month, the PMS said that it was an increase; the Prime Minister had originally said 800 million over three years but it was now 1.2 billion. He would be prepared to go further if the objectives of Copenhagen were met, which meant other countries being ambitious and a comprehensive deal being reached.

Put that that extra money would have to come from cuts at DfID the PMS said that the money had been set out already in the PBR; it came from an existing budget.

Put that existing money at DfID would have to be cut, the PMS said it was best to talk to DfID about their budget. Tackling climate change was a priority for us – the affect it could have on developing countries was devastating.

Asked how we could afford to give away so much money when we had such a large deficit, the PMS said that climate change was an important issue for every country, but particularly developing countries, and the Prime Minister was committed to helping those countries. Climate change would affect us all and the PBR also set out measures to help us tackle climate change in this country.
