MPs’ Expenses
« Brussels | Back to most recent briefing | Brussels »
Put that there had been a u-turn on Government policy regarding MPs’ expenses, the PMS said that was not the case; we had always said that we would bring forward legislation, if necessary, and the Written Ministerial Statement laid by Harriet Harman and Jack Straw this morning made that clear. We had found the opportunity to put this legislation into an appropriate bill, which we would bring forward in the new year.
Put that it would have been better to tell Sir Christopher Kelly of plans for legislation in advance, the PMS said that both Sir Christopher Kelly and Professor Sir Ian Kennedy, Chairman of the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, had been involved in discussions on the proposals and were in agreement with the proposed approach.
Asked about the Prime Minister’s expense claim of 500 for repainting of a “summer house”, the PMS said that his political colleagues had confirmed that the Prime Minister voluntarily paid back this money last month.
