» Thursday, December 10, 2009Phonecall with Premier Wen
Asked about the Prime Minister’s phone call with Premier Wen and what was said about human rights, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that they spoke about the specific case of Akmal Shaikh, who was currently on death row for drugs trafficking. The Prime Minister asked Premier Wen to ensure that mental health considerations were properly considered in the Chinese Government’s review of the case. The Prime Minister welcomed Chinese commitments on emissions reductions, and encouraged Premier Wen to be even more ambitious as part of a Copenhagen deal. On the economy, the Prime Minister said that he was keen to continue to boost UK-China bilateral trade, and encouraged continued business-to-business co-operation as well as further high-level Chinese visits to the UK. Asked if there was any connection between the phone call this morning and the fact that Premier Wen had announced he would attend Copenhagen, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had been encouraging leaders to attend since he first announced his attendance, but the aim of the phone call was not to persuade Premier Wen to attend Copenhagen.
