Asked why the Prime Minister was so convinced that Osama bin Laden was in Pakistan, the PMS said that based on the best evidence we had the Prime Minister believed that the al Queda leadership was in Waziristan. The most important thing was to work as closely as possible with Pakistan to ensure that we could do all we could to track down the al Queda leadership. The meeting between the Prime Minister and the Pakistani Prime Minister this morning had been very positive and had included discussions on the development fund, the aim to intensify the security cooperation and the need to tackle extremism. The Prime Minister remained grateful for the efforts that the Pakistan army was making in Waziristan. We would only be able to succeed in Afghanistan if we were able to operate on a coordinated basis. Put that there were divisions between the UK and Pakistan over the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden, the PMS said that he would not characterise it in that way; there was no division in what we were trying to achieve in Afghanistan. We would not be able to achieve our goals in Afghanistan without working closely with Pakistan. Briefing took place at 10:00 | Search for related news Original PMOS briefings are © Crown Copyright.
