Expenses

Asked if the Prime Minister was happy with the new appeal system that had been set up for MPs, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister had said consistently that the most important thing was to turn our back on the discredited old system of expenses and we were well on the way to doing that.
The announcement was a matter for the House authorities; the Prime Minister supported the Legg process and he had also made it clear that he would encourage MPs to cooperate with the Legg process.
Asked if there would be a vote at the end of the process, the PMS said he was sure that there was but he would check. What MPs could not do was vote on the new expenses process that had been put in place, just aspects of it.
Asked if the Prime Minister was happy that the committee had proposed that MPs should be able to pay back money owed out of future earnings, the PMS said that that was up to the House authorities to determine.
