Asked for a response to the news that the five yachtsmen were being released from Iran, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that the Prime Minister was pleased that they would be reunited with family and friends as he had been following developments closely since the beginning. The PMS directed press to the Foreign Secretary’s comments in the media and to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) for further details. Asked what consular access the five men had, the PMS said the most important thing was that the situation had been resolved and the men were free and directed journalists to the FCO for more detail. The PMS was then asked to clarify whether the issues had indeed been consular, given that the Iranian Ambassador had been into the FCO and the Foreign Secretary had spoken to his counterpart, to which the PMS said that this was an FCO-managed matter. He said it was dealt with in a quiet, diplomatic way which was entirely right and the result was that the five men were free. Asked whether the Prime Minister had any involvement in negotiation, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister had been kept informed and the FCO had led the situation.
