Asked if the Prime Minister was taking on board the case made by Kim Howells to withdraw from Afghanistan, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said Mr Howell had been writing in a personal capacity. The PMS said our policy on Afghanistan is clear, and our forces were securing the UK’s safety, particularly from terrorist attacks. Asked if the deaths of soldiers would have an impact on the policy of Afghanisation’, the PMS said the soldiers’ deaths were tragic and the Prime Minister had sent his condolences to the family of each soldier. He said the full facts of the situation were still being gathered, led by the Ministry of Defence. The PMS said Afghanisation was a critical part of the long-term strategy in Afghanistan and the UK would continue to undertake the extremely important work building local security forces including the military and police, in partnership with the Afghan Government. Asked if the Prime Minister was concerned about this incident setting back the process of Afghanisation, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister remained completely committed to Afghanisation and that the strategy would be pursued. The PMS reminded assembled press that operations in Afghanistan were an international coalition effort with 42 partners.
