Asked what the Prime Minister thought about Condoleezza Rice s comment that President Mugabe had outstayed his welcome, the PMS said that there had been an election in Zimbabwe earlier this year and the democratic will of the Zimbabwean people had been expressed. It was disappointing that the discussions following the election had dragged on for so long, and it was important that a conclusion was reached that reflected the will of the Zimbabwean people, as expressed in those elections.
Put that it was time for Britain to do more, the PMS said that there was a process within Zimbabwe involving Morgan Tsvangirai, and as part of that process discussions had been taking place.
Asked if the Prime Minister would say it was time for President Mugabe to go, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister would say it was important that whatever the settlement was it should reflect the will of the people of Zimbabwe, as reflected in the elections earlier in the year.
