Asked if the law on party funding needed changing in light of the Peter Hain announcement today, the Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) replied that the Electoral Commission had issued a statement this morning relating to this, and in the first instance it was for them to look into. Asked if the Prime Minister was surprised that a candidate for Deputy Leader could not be proved to be a regulated recipient of donations, the PMS replied that it was not for the Prime Minister to comment on what had been a police investigation. Put that the law the Prime Minister brought in had failed, the PMS said that if there were any specific issues, it was for the Electoral Commission to look at in the first instance. Asked if the Prime Minister had any reaction to the announcement that Peter Hain would not be charged, the PMS said that he didn t think it was for him to comment on the Peter Hain case, as he was a Labour MP, not a member of the Government. This was an issue that related to funding for the campaign of the Labour Party leadership so it was best to contact a political spokesman for a fuller reaction. Put that it was premature to be talking about Peter Hain returning to Cabinet, the PMS said that that was a reshuffle question.
