Cabinet

The Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) began by informing journalists that the official Cabinet met for around 45 minutes this morning; the main items discussed included an update on the economy and financial markets from the Chancellor, an update from Shaun Woodward on the situation in Northern Ireland, and updates on the situations in Zimbabwe and Georgia from David Miliband. On the economy the Chancellor and Prime Minister made clear that whilst this was clearly a period of instability in global financial markets as had been seen very vividly in recent days, the fundamentals of our economy remained sound. Interest rates remained low, employment was close to record highs, our low levels of public sector debt meant that the Government could increase borrowing at the right time, and the long-term decisions that we were making would strengthen the economy going forward.

Asked if the Prime Minister had lost one of his ministers this morning, and had there been any communication between No10 and Mr Cairns, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister was focusing on the big issues that faced the country, as was clear by the issues that were discussed at Cabinet this morning that was overwhelmingly the economy at the moment, which was taking up a large amount of his time, and he was in Northern Ireland for some important meetings and an important speech later today. There were also further announcements today including Jacqui Smith s on youth crime for example. David Cairns remained a Minister of the Government.

Asked if there had been any communication, the PMS repeated that David Cairns was a Minister of the Government. The Prime Minister was focusing his time on the big issues that were facing the country.

Asked if the Prime Minister had a message for any Ministers like David Cairns who were taking no steps to close down damaging talk about them, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister s view on what he was doing was focusing on the big issues that faced the country at the moment. That was very much the focus and the mood at Cabinet this morning. As the Government, we would continue to focus on the big issues that mattered to the country.
