Asked if the Prime Minister would be voting on the fuel vote later, the PMS said that the fuel vote was more of a routine opposition day debate; the Prime Minister had a number of important meetings later today.

Asked what the Prime Minister thought of Nick Clegg’s suggestion that if an MP was caught with their hands in the till there should automatically be a by-election in their constituency, the PMS said that the Prime Minister disapproved very strongly of any MPs who were found to be behaving inappropriately in relation to their financial affairs. The by-election idea was one proposal that had been put forward but the general principal was that the Prime Minister believed that there were, and there should, be rigorous systems in place for the financial management of MPs’ expenses and that they should be properly enforced.

Asked if the Prime Minister would be offering any specific help regarding oil industry security in Nigeria at this afternoon’s meeting with the Nigerian President, the PMS said that journalists should wait to see the outcomes of the meeting.

Asked if the Prime Minister believed there should be a national road pricing scheme, the PMS said that the Government’s policy on national road pricing was set out in the document that Ruth Kelly had published today.
