Cannabis
« Zimbabwe | Back to most recent briefing | Afghanistan »
Asked if the Prime Minister was determined to go ahead with bringing in tougher sentences for cannabis if the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) recommended that it stayed as a Class C drug, the PMS said that we did not expect to receive the report from the advisory committee on the classification of drugs until for at least another month or so. As we understood it, the report in the media was based on one presentation given to a meeting and the ACMD themselves were still some way away from making any final decisions on it. We had not seen any formal representations on the subject from them and we were not anticipating anything for at least another month or so.
With regards to the Prime Minister’s position, he had made that fairly clear in his press conference earlier that week, saying that he would take their advice and look at what the ACMD said. The PMS advised people not to get ahead of themselves, as we didn’t know what the advice of the ACMD would be.
