EU Referendum

Asked if some were right in thinking that the Prime Minister had not said anything new about the EU referendum overnight, the Prime Minister's Spokesman (PMS) said that she was somewhat surprised at the level of interest this morning, as it was similar to what was said on Monday and Tuesday. The Prime Minister had put forward the view that he had set out with the Dutch Prime Minister that the treaty we would be proposing would be a different kind of treaty, in that it was an amending, rather than a constitutional treaty.

Freedom of Information Act

Asked if the Government was concerned that if David McLean's Bill went through, it might undermine the Freedom of Information legislation, the PMS replied that as the Leader of the House had made clear yesterday, this was a Parliamentary issue for Parliament to discuss, and we did not think it appropriate for the Government to stand in the way of such a debate. The PMS added that she was not going to get into a clearly hypothetical question.

Helen Liddell

Asked if the Prime Minister thought it was helpful for Helen Liddell to say that he had never seen Iraq as part of the war on terror, the PMOS said that if the reporter actually looked at the quote in full it makes it clear what Helen Liddell was stating is the fact which was we didn't say that the war on Iraq was about terrorism, but she then went on to say that it is a fact that terrorists are now trying to use the war in Iraq and we are facing terrorism in Iraq.  In terms of Australian press coverage, that was more about Australian politics and that was not something he would comment on.

Iraq

Asked if the estimate of the death toll in Iraq and the bombs today suggested that the surge was not working, the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman (PMOS) said the evidence on the ground in Baghdad is that progress is being made but there are also determined efforts being made to counter that progress and that was also expected at this period.  The reality in fact, in Iraq, is that there is a democratically elected Government and there are people trying to thwart the will of that democratically elected government.  The PMOS added what the Prime Minister believes is that we should support the government as it tries to take control of the country, as it is doing in Maysan today.
