Asked if the Prime Minister would be meeting the Families Against the War group this week, the PMOS said there were established procedures for arranging such meetings. He had no doubt that if those procedures were followed there would be a suitable response. The PMOS went on to say that the Prime Minister fully recognised and respected those who took an opposite view to his with regards to the war. At the same time it was important to recognise, in perhaps this of all weeks, the progress that had been made in Iraq. Despite all the difficulties, which nobody was underplaying, not only had we had 3 democratic elections, but also we now had the formation of a Government in Iraq that represented all sections of Iraq, the Sunnis, the Shia and the Kurds, for the first time. Therefore it was important that while, recognising and listening to those opposed to the war in the UK, we should also recognise the democratically expressed wishes of the current Iraqi Government. Their wish was for us to stay and help them secure not just the peace but also the democracy as it developed.
