Early Release Scheme
« David Blunkett | Back to most recent briefing | David Blunkett »
Asked if the Prime Minister was worried about the early release scheme where criminals were let out of jail early and the fact that the failure rate of that scheme had almost doubled since the Home Secretary increased the discounted time that offenders got from 60 to 135 days the PMOS said that in terms of the precise figures the reporter should speak to the Home Office. But in terms of the overall perspective, as the Prime Minister had indicated from PMQs, it was some 2% of cases, but as he had also underlined that fact did not in any way lessen the impact on the victims of those crimes, but we did need to keep it in perspective. In terms of the early release scheme these like all measures would be kept under review.
