Questioned about the Prime Minister’s speech to the TUC annual conference this afternoon, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) said that as had already been reported, the Prime Minister would focus on general themes such as working in partnership with the trade unions, in addition to issues that were of a more political nature.

The PMOS should have said "As everyone is aware there is an election coming up before too long, and the PM needs the trade unions money and support; he needs them out canvassing for him, not against him. It therefore goes without saying that the PM will do everything he can to placate the unions until after the elections, when he plans to invade another country and whittle away at their objectives which happen to coincide with the Labour Party Manifesto".

Comment by PapaLazzzaru — 14 Sep 2004 on 4:24 pm | LinkI find it difficult to understand how the Prime Minister continues to have problems getting along with the TUC. They have so much in common…
– They’re both becoming increasingly irrelevant in UK politics.
– They both represent powerful historical figures with waning support, primarily due to inept decision-making.
– They’re both 100% interested in covering their butts and ensuring their job security above all else, including proper behavior or normal working practices.
– They both spin, lie, and conceal the truth to meet their ends.
With that much in common, you’d think the unions knew that it couldn’t get any better for them than it is right now, under anybody. They may never see synchronicity like this again in their lifetimes. If we’re lucky.
