Iraq Inquiry

Asked if correspondence between Tony Blair and President Bush had not been released to the Iraq inquiry by the Cabinet Office because it could harm relations between the UK and USA, the PMS said that it was a matter for the Cabinet Office who had to follow a clear protocol for every declassification request. The PMS added a large number of documents had already been submitted to the Inquiry.

Asked if there had been conversations between the Government and the Office of President of the United States, the PMS said that he would not comment on specific conversations.

Asked if the Prime Minister had been asked to intervene personally in this issue in order to secure the release of the correspondence, the PMS said the Prime Minister believed the Chilcot Inquiry was very important and that there was a process in place which was independent.

Asked if timings had been confirmed for the Prime Minister’s appearance at the inquiry, the PMS said that Sir John Chilcot’s inquiry office and the Prime Minister’s office would be in touch with each other.

Asked if the Prime Minister would be watching Tony Blair’s appearance at the inquiry, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had a busy schedule ahead, as per usual, but always kept up-to-date on the Chilcot inquiry.
