Northern Ireland

Asked when the Prime Minister would be in Belfast, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that the Prime Minister and the Taoiseach had just left and were travelling together to Belfast. They would be having a joint meeting with Martin McGuiness and Peter Robinson when they arrived. The hope was that a solution would be found.

Asked if the Prime Minister would be staying overnight in Belfast, the PMS said that we would have to wait and see how the talks went.

Asked if the Prime Minister and the Taoiseach had known this morning that they would be going to Northern Ireland, the PMS said that the final decision to go to Belfast was made at their meeting this afternoon.

Asked if the visit could be described as an emergency visit, the PMS said she would not characterise it as an emergency visit. The Prime Minister had already said this morning that this was a complex situation, but there was a chance of progress and the problems were soluble. The Prime Minister and the Taoiseach were going to Northern Ireland so as they could help and provide whatever support was necessary in order that a final agreement could be reached.

Asked if the talks would go on late into the evening, the PMS said that there was the potential for the talks to go on late.
