Chilcot Inquiry

Asked if Downing Street would make public Sir John Chilcot’s reply to the Prime Minister’s letter, the PMS said that the Prime Minister’s letter had only recently been sent to Sir John Chilcot and there was no reason why we wouldn’t let people know about a response.

Asked why the Prime Minister had changed his mind in regard to appearing at the Iraq inquiry before the general election, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had not changed his mind and had consistently held the view that it was the best thing for this inquiry to be independent; that the Government cooperated with whatever the inquiry wanted in regards to documentation; and that he was very happy to give evidence when asked.

Asked if the Prime Minister would prefer to give evidence before an election, the PMS said that the Prime Minister was perfectly happy to appear at the inquiry before or after the election.
