Afghanistan Conference

The Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that the preparations for next week’s meeting were on track. The Prime Minister discussed the issues with President Karzai last week, who was closely involved with the agenda of the meeting. The Foreign Secretary also had discussions about the meeting when he was in Kabul at the weekend.

This was a foreign ministers meeting and David Miliband would be chairing. Over sixty delegations had been invited including foreign ministers from the International Security Assistance Force; Afghanistan’s immediate neighbours and key regional players; representatives from NATO, the UN, the EU and the World Bank. Responses were coming in and at the moment fifty-six foreign ministers had accepted.

Asked if Hilary Clinton would be attending the conference, the PMS said that Hilary Clinton had been invited to represent the US and as far as we knew she was planning to attend.

Asked if Chancellor Merkel and President Sarkozy would attend the conference, the PMS said that at an earlier stage the thinking was that Heads of Government would attend but it was now a foreign ministers meeting.

Asked if there would be a Yemeni representative at the Yemen meeting, the PMS said yes.
