The Prime Minister’s spokesman (PMS) started by giving an update on the situation in Haiti by announcing there had been an European Union meeting (EU) earlier that day and that the total EU contribution to the earthquake relief stood at a preliminary total of 30 million Euros in humanitarian assistance. The PMS said that the Prime Minister was extremely appreciative of all those who had given generously to the DEC appeal and enormously grateful to the British fire fighters taking part in search and rescue operations in Haiti. The PMS added the Government had located and checked over sixty British nationals in Haiti and they were safe and well. The PMS also confirmed a Cabinet meeting would be taking place on Tuesday 19th January. Asked if the Government knew if there were concerns that some British nationals unaccounted for in Haiti, the PMS said concerns remained, but a complete list of British nationals in Haiti did not exist because citizens did not need to let the British authorities know when they were in a country like Haiti. Asked what the combined British Government and charitable donations to Haiti were, the PMS said there had been 23 million to the DEC appeal and 20million from the Government. Asked if the Prime Minister had said anything regarding the problems and slow distribution of aid in Haiti, the PMS said there had been problems on the ground because there was only one airport in Haiti and this had been caused a bottle-neck in aid supplies, the PMS added that every effort had been made to get aid and support through to the people and that extreme difficulties faced aid teams and communities across Haiti.
