Economy
Asked whether the Prime Minister agreed with the Chancellor that the recession was over, the PMS said that he had not heard the Chancellor characterise it in the present tense. The Government had always said that we would see a recovery by the turn of the year.
Put that the Chancellor had said it in a Daily Record interview that the recession was over, the PMS said he had not seen the article but the Prime Minister and the Chancellor were of the view that they had always expected a recovery towards the end of last year and the beginning of this year.
Asked if the Government had seen an early version of the statistics due out at the end of January, the PMS said no as they were ONS-protected. The Chancellor had given a number of economic indicators that would suggest that the economy was moving in the right direction.
