Haiti

Our specialist teams are on the ground and commenced working. Our ambassador, Steve Fisher, and a consular officer travelled from Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) yesterday and are now on the ground in Haiti. They are working closely with our resident Honorary Consul.

A Foreign Office consular rapid deployment team arrived in Santo Domingo yesterday to reinforce the Embassy. Some of that team are now also deploying to Haiti to strengthen current efforts to assess the situation, locate British Nationals and provide consular assistance.

The FCO team in Port au Prince have already located and checked on over 30 other British Nationals, who have confirmed they are safe and well, and are coordinating with US, Canadian and EU partners to facilitate the evacuation of any British Nationals who wish to leave Haiti.

The PM continues to be regularly updated on the situation.

Asked whether the Foreign Office had received any enquiries by people who might have relatives missing in the country, the PMS said that he was sure the Foreign Office would have had enquiries, but he did not have any details of that. The PMS advised people to speak directly to the Foreign Office on the matter.

Put that there were concerns over the lack of a coordinated response to the earthquake and was there anything that the Government was doing to address that problem other than providing the money that had been mentioned, the PMS said that it was an extremely difficult situation.

The international community was doing its very best to get in and coordinate a response. Asked if the UK was speaking to the UN or the Haitian authorities about infrastructure issues, the PMS replied that we should have sympathy with the Haitian authorities that were dealing with this tragedy. The UN had experienced people on the ground and the international community stood ready to help with immediate needs.
