Demonstration at Wootton Bassett

Asked for the Prime Minister’s view on the planned demonstration at Wootton Bassett, the PMS said that at this point the demonstration was being considered and the appropriate approval would need to be sought. The Prime Minister felt that anything that was considered offensive to families of troops in Afghanistan would be completely inappropriate.

Asked if there were any plans to monitor the individual who was organising the supposed protest, the PMS said that we did not yet know what this individual proposed. Anything that would cause offence to our troops in Afghanistan and their families would be completely inappropriate.

Asked if there were any plans to use current legislation to ban the proposed demonstration, the PMS said that we did not yet know whether the demonstration was going ahead so we would not comment on a theoretical question.
