Iceland

Asked for the Prime Minister’s view on the decision made by the Government of Iceland, the PMS said that we were disappointed by the decision and expected Iceland to live up to its legal obligations and repay the loan.

Asked if there had been any diplomatic activity between the UK and Iceland since the Icelandic Government’s announcement, the PMS said that the Treasury would work with colleagues in Iceland, the Netherlands and the EU to find a way forward. There were binding obligations under European laws. We appreciated the hard work the Government of Iceland had undertaken to get a loan deal through Parliament, but we needed to see that the money would be repaid.

Asked if this would be an obstacle to Iceland joining the EU, the PMS said that the priority was for the loan to be repaid.
