Asked whether the information shared with the White House concerned the fact that the individual had had a visa refused, the PMS said that he would not say anything more about what intelligence may or may not have been passed. We routinely exchanged large quantities of intelligence with the US on a two-way basis and to say anything further than that would be inappropriate.

Asked why the Prime Minister had not spoken President Obama about the incident on Christmas day, the PMS said that there had been, and continued to be, a number of discussions at various levels between White House and Downing Street officials. Since the incident the Prime Minister had been kept closely informed of these discussions.

Put that the Opposition had said that the Prime Minister was attempting to spin the whole terrorism crisis, the PMS said that any suggestion that the Prime Minister would play politics with such an important issue was completely unfounded. What we had been describing over the weekend was an intensification of current activity in relation to Yemen. We also wanted to shed light on activity already underway e.g. the international meeting being held within the margins of the Afghanistan conference in January.

Asked if the press release sent out at the weekend had been seen by the Prime Minister before it went out, the PMS said that the Prime Minister did not routinely sign off every press release but he was aware of what was being said on his behalf.

Asked if someone made a mistake with the wording of the press release, the PMS said that he wouldn’t accept that there had been a mistake in the wording. The press release made it clear that there were a number of initiatives already underway and there was a regular dialogue between Downing Street and the White House, and we were intensifying our efforts.

Asked if any implication that the Prime Minister and President Obama had been speaking was unintentional, the PMS said that there was no suggestion in the press release that the two had spoken directly but plenty of indication that there was regular dialogue between Downing Street and the White House.
