Nuclear Power

Asked if the Prime Minister was concerned with the reports that the Health and Safety Executive were not happy with the designs for the new nuclear power stations, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister’s view was that safety was paramount for new nuclear power stations and to this end, the regulators both here and in Europe had been working closely together and with the new reactor vendors. It was the role of the regulator to identify any of those issues in the early stages of the design, rather than the construction and this is what they had done.

Asked if the Government was fearful that this could delay construction, the PMS said that we were still on track for 2011.
