» Tuesday, November 20, 1900EU High Representative
Asked if the Prime Minister thought that the appointment of Baroness Ashton as EU High Representative was appropriate given her past involvement with CND, the PMS said that the appointment of Baroness Ashton was a very good result for Britain. The Prime Minister had been keen for Tony Blair to be a candidate for the Presidency of the EU, but as it became clear that it was unlikely to happen, the Prime Minister made a decisive intervention and his colleagues were very supportive of a UK nominee for High Representative. It was important that there was now a senior British member of the European Commission. Baroness Ashton had been involved with the CND a long time ago, as many people across the parties had been. She had been a member of the Lords, a Government Minister and very skilfully negotiated through the Lisbon Treaty in the House of Lords at a time when there was not a Government majority. We had the right person for the right job. Asked if the Prime Minister had spoken to Tony Blair, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had spoken to Tony Blair yesterday.
