Asked if there had been any change in the situation and whether the Pime Minister would get involved, the PMS said that the Prime Minister and the Government as a whole remained very concerned about the prospect of a national strike, scheduled for tomorrow. The Prime Minister was keen for the two parties to continue to talk. Talks had finished late last night and the Prime Minister hoped talks would continue today.
The suggestion that ACAS became involved, was one that the Government would continue to support, but management had made it clear that that would be on the basis that they would expect the unions not to continue with the strike. Lord Mandelson and Pat McFadden had made it very clear yesterday the self-defeating nature of any strike if it was to take place.
