Asked whether the Prime Minister would support Royal Mail management s view that they would only attend ACAS if the threat of strike was removed, the PMS said the Prime Minister wanted the talks to continue and he thought ACAS was a good option. The PMS told the assembled press that it is the Government s view that it is important the two parties involved continue their discussions to avoid risks to the Royal Mail business and customers of a damaging strike at this time of year.

Asked if the Prime Minister regretted that the Government was not able to push through privatisation, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister is focused on where we are currently with the Royal Mail s evolution, it is an important business for the country and the economy and the company needed to move forward as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Asked if the Prime Minister ruled our privatisation entirely, the PMS said the Prime Minister was focussed on making sure this period for the company was resolved satisfactorily.

Put that the government was not ruling out full-scale privatisation, the PMS told assembled press that the Government is focussed on what the Royal Mail had to do to overcome the threat of a strike. The PMS said Lord Mandelson had made clear the Government s view on privatisation earlier in the year.

Asked if the Prime Minister had ruled out personally intervening before the planned strike, the PMS said the Prime Minister had full confidence in Lord Mandelson and Pat McFadden who will be keeping close to the situation and encouraging the two parties to keep discussions going in order to avoid the prospect of a strike.

Asked if the Prime Minister would view a strike as the death of Royal Mail, the PMS said the Prime Minister would not characterise the strike in those terms, however he was concerned that if Royal Mail continued to lose business it would be very difficult to win that business back. The PMS said the implications for Royal Mail were serious and should not be underestimated however confidence should be placed in Royal Mail s ability to come through this difficult period.
