In answer to the question on whether the Prime Minister intended to ask Sir Thomas Legg to investigate home flipping, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister was comfortable that the Legg process was underway and should be completed as quickly as possible. He explained the Prime Minister had responded to Legg and was encouraging other MPs to do the same. The PMS said terms of reference for the Legg inquiry were agreed with the MEC and it was for the MEC to receive the report once the process had been completed. Asked if the Prime Minister had responded to Legg by physically writing a cheque, the PMS replied he was not aware that a cheque had been written and pointed out that the Prime Minister intended to make the payment. Asked if the Prime Minister had a view on the performance of the fees office, the PMS said that no view had been expressed. Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with Harriet Harman that the Legg process appeared arbitrary, the PMS explained that the Prime Minister and the Leader of the House were completely adjoined. The PMS said a process was underway and MPs had the opportunity in the next three weeks to make any comments about the letters they had received and representations about the nature of the process. It is fine encouraging the MP’s to make their representations known about the expenses letters but when David Cameron has said “Pay up or get out” and there has been a public co-operation pact by the leaders made it puts the MPs in a very difficult position. Considering that no ruls were broken, although very bent in places, this is not a good time for politics. Experienced people are losing their jobs because of retrospective rulings.
