Unemployment
« Afghanistan | Back to most recent briefing | Sir Terry Leahy »
Asked for a comment on the unemployment figures released today, the PMS said they had shown a significant slowing in the rate of unemployment. The Government believed that investment to get people back to work was working; 5,000 jobs would be created today under the Future Jobs Fund and the Jobs Guarantee was getting young people into jobs, training or volunteering posts. The quarterly rise in unemployment was significantly lower than in previous months.
Asked if the Prime Minister was relieved with the figures, the PMS said that the Prime Minister knew this was an important issue for the country and as these figures showed a significant slowing it must be seen as a positive sign.
