Afghanistan

Asked about troop numbers in Afghanistan, the PMS said that the position on troop numbers remained unchanged; there were three key factors to consider. Firstly, the outcome of the election; secondly, in light of military advice, the situation on the ground; and thirdly, the outcome of the McChrystal review.
The Prime Minister had made clear last week that any increase in British troops would need to be conditional; firstly, in terms of the feasibility of sending the necessary equipment, especially against IEDs; and secondly, in terms of the right strategy, with an emphasis on Afghanisation, which came up last week when General McChrystal met with the Prime Minister at No 10. Finally, a new Afghan Government would need to be ready to seize initiative on the major issue of corruption.
