Photos of Prime Minister’s children

Asked what the situation was regarding the publication of photos of the Prime Minister’s children, the PMS said that, as had always been the case, the Prime Minister and Mrs Brown did not want any publicity of their children and thanked the media for, in the main, respecting this wish. We were extremely disappointed that the Daily Telegraph chose to print a photograph of the Prime Minister’s family, in which the faces of the children could be clearly seen. This would appear to be a breech of the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) code regarding children of people in public life and we asked that people did not follow this example.

Asked if there was a feeling that the lack of a photocall last week of the Prime Minister on holiday may have contributed to the Daily Telegraph’s decision to print the photo, the PMS said no; it had never been the case that we would allow a photograph of the Prime Minister’s children.

Asked if there were any regrets about not doing a photocall last week, the PMS said no; we looked at these things on a case-by-case basis.

Asked if the Prime Minister or Mrs Brown intended to complain to the PCC, the PMS said that he would not go into detail on the action we would take and reiterated that we asked people not to follow the Daily Telegraph’s example.
