The Speaker

Asked what the Prime Minister would say to MPs who would like the Speaker to step down, the PMS replied that it was the Prime Minister s view that the House of Commons had appointed the Speaker and that was a constitutional position that needed to be respected. The Prime Minister had been expressing his views on the Speaker himself over the last few days.
Asked if there had been any contact between the two, the PMS said that we would not normally comment on discussions between the Prime Minister and senior officials in Parliament such as the Speaker.
Put that if the Speaker was to resign there would not necessarily have to be a by election, the PMS said that he was sure people could find a constitutional expert to answer that question.
