Asked whether the Prime Minister had had a discussion with Cabinet Ministers about him tiring of becoming the face of the recession, the PMS replied that that was not the view of the Prime Minister at all. The Prime Minister was absolutely clear that as the Prime Minister of the country it was very important that he showed leadership at this time, so he would continue to be out and about, explaining what he was doing, just as other Cabinet Ministers were doing.

As the Prime Minister was saying yesterday, this needed to be explained in the context of our overall stability and recovery plan, where at each stage we had been relatively ahead of other countries; first in terms of how we re-capitalised the banks, second in terms of making the case and then implementing the fiscal stimulus and now in terms of the action we were taking on getting the banks to lend more.

It was interesting to note that the Dutch Government had announced a very similar scheme in relation to insuring bad bank assets as we had announced last Monday. There was going to be a continuing debate about these things, both internationally and nationally, but we were very clear about what we were doing and how we were explaining it.

Of course this was a very difficult time and the Government and Prime Minister understood that, but we were also very clear that we had the right framework in place to do what we could to help Britain get through this. Asked whether the Prime Minister was disappointed that polls showed that the public were not enthused by this, the PMS said that what the Prime Minister was concerned about was doing the right thing for the country and that was what he believed he was doing.

Asked what the point of the meeting was that the Prime Minister had with other Cabinet Ministers last Thursday and was it a special meeting, the PMS said that Cabinet Ministers had meetings all the time about all sorts of things and he didn t see anything unusual about that.
