The Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) began the press briefing by telling journalists that we had just issued a joint statement from all EU Heads of Government/State. This set out the common position of the European Union in relation do how they were dealing with the financial situation. The Prime Minister had been discussing this with President Sarkozy, who was the President of the European Union at the moment, and we had been very closely involved in the drafting of the text. The common position of the European Union was very close to the position that we had taken consistently in recent weeks.
Asked if the Prime Minister had had a conversation with the German Chancellor yet, the PMS said not yet, it was due to happen a bit later on.
Asked if we had any further clarification of the German position, the PMS said he had nothing to add to what he had said this morning.
