Economy: Meeting in Paris

Asked about the Prime Minister s telephone conversation with President Sarkozy, the Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) said that the Prime Minister had confirmed on the telephone call that he would attend the meeting in Paris on Saturday. President Sarkozy informed the Prime Minister that it was not the case that the French were proposing a European bailout fund.

Asked if there would be a discussion regarding an EU-wide bailout, the PMS said that we were not anticipating any discussion of an EU bailout fund at the meeting on Saturday.

Asked what would be proposed at the meeting, the PMS replied that the purpose of the meeting on Saturday was to discuss how each of the four major economies in Europe were responding to the global financial situation.

Asked if it would simply be a meeting in the round or if people were expected to come up with proposals, the PMS said that he was sure proposals would be discussed and no doubt we would bring our own proposals as to what we could usefully do at the European level in order to deal with both the crisis and the impact of the crisis.

Asked if the Chancellor and/or the Foreign Secretary would attend, the PMS said no as it was heads only.

Asked if President Sarkozy felt like he had been misrepresented in the media, the PMS said that it was for the French to set out their position.

Asked for details on the telephone call between the Prime Minister and President Sarkozy, the PMS said that it was a very constructive discussion but he did not want to get into specifics. We had been in very close contact with the French in recent days, ahead of this potential meeting, which was now confirmed for the weekend. Both sides agreed that it would be useful for the two of them to talk.
