Downing Street Says » Recess Arrangements

Asked how things were going with the new leader in post, under the temporary regime, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) replied that Downing Street was operating in the normal way.

Asked if there was a meeting in the Cabinet Room at 9am this morning, the PMS replied that he was not going to comment on the internal processes in detail.

Asked how best to categorise what was Ms Harman was doing, the PMS replied that as we made clear last week, the Prime Minister remained in charge whilst he was on holiday, and in the normal way there were senior Ministers available to deal with the day to day business of Government.

Put that today Ms Harman was available more than any other Minister, the PMS replied that Harriet Harman was one of the senior Ministers available to deal with the day to day business of Government.

Asked if idea that Harriet Harman would have a particular role this week was wrong, the PMS replied that Harriet Harman was working with Downing Street and Ministers to see through the day to day business of Government.

Asked if Harriet Harman was operating from Downing Street, the PMS replied that Harriet Harman had been in meetings in Downing Street this morning.

Asked who coordinated the senior Ministers who looked after the day to day business, and was this Harriet Harman, the PMS replied that Cabinet met last week and discussed Government business over the course of the summer, as was explained last week.

Asked when the next scheduled Cabinet meeting would be, the PMS replied he believed Cabinet would meet next in September, but he would check on the exact date.

Asked if the Prime Minister had staff with him on holiday, and if special communications been installed, the PMS replied that he was not going to go into detail, but the Prime Minister was kept informed in the normal way.

Asked if Tuesday’s report from Harriet Harman on women would include a news conference, the PMS replied that there would be a press release outlining the progress that the Government had made over the course of the year, including on greater flexible working amongst a range of other measures. He was not aware of any planned press conference.

Asked about the Prime Minister’s mood as he began his holiday after a pretty grim weekend, the PMS replied that he was not going to characterise the Prime Minister’s mood as he had not spoken to him this morning.

Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with Harriet Harman’s comments that the country had not yet seen the best of the Prime Minister, the PMS replied that again he had not discussed it with him so he could not say.

Asked if Harriet Harman would have her own press office for dealing with No10 matters, the PMS replied that Harriet Harman’s office operated in the normal way.
