Asked for further information regarding the Prime Minister’s meetings with Bertie Ahern, the PMOS said that the Prime Minister was meeting the Taoiseach tomorrow morning.
Asked for further information about whether the Prime Minister was meeting Ian Paisley or Gerry Adams, the PMOS said that the Prime Minister had met Ian Paisley yesterday, and we would no doubt be in touch with other parties at a later stage. The PMOS said that we were not going to give a running commentary on meetings. The important thing was that at this stage, we did the preparatory work, ready for an intensive round of talks at a later stage.
Asked where we were in terms of talks, the PMOS said that the next major step was the publication of the IMC report in early October. That would be the trigger for an intensive period of discussion.
