Clare Short

Asked if we were aware of any action that the Chief Whip might take against Clare Short as a result of her remarks earlier today, the PMOS said that he had not been informed of any action, as he would leave that to the Whips’ office.

Asked what the current position was on PR for Westminster, the PMOS said that the usual response to the question was to say that there was no change in position.

Put that one of Clare Short’s criticisms today was that Cabinet Government no longer existed, and that it was governed by "young lads", the PMOS said that anybody who had listened to Cabinet today discuss what were very serious issues from the different perspectives of the different Ministers would see that Cabinet Government was alive and well.

Asked if that meant there had been dissent, the PMOS said that the definition was a very strange, but very Independent-like one of what good Cabinet Government meant. The PMOS added that sometimes the Cabinet actually had to agree policy, strange as that might seem to the Independent. .
