Social Exclusion

Asked for further information about the Prime Minister’s plans this week, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that this week was about policy planning, and looking at the subjects and issues that were going to be vital over the coming period. The Prime Minister would be working from Chequers, and the seminar he was holding today would be with Ministers, including Hilary Armstrong, Beverley Hughes, Pat McFadden, as well as representatives from social exclusion organisations such as the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and charities such as Turning Point.

The PMS said that the issue here was that a great deal had been done already on social exclusion, for example, there had been 800,000 children being lifted out of poverty. However, it was still estimated that 2.5% of every generation would still end up being socially excluded. Therefore, the Prime Minister would lead those discussions on how we dealt with those hard-to-reach groups.

Asked when Hilary Armstrong would publish her action plan, the PMS replied it would published week of 11 September. The PMS also said that following on from his work today, the Prime Minister next week would undertake a regional tour on social exclusion, and give a speech as part of his lecture tour.

Asked if there would be any new policy issues, the PMS replied that as we had set out at the weekend, the other issues that the Prime Minister was looking at were health, including waiting time targets, education and the Academies programme, as well as the challenges of globalisation and continuing the progress in the Middle East.

Asked if the Prime Minister had anything new to say regarding health, education etc, the PMS said that the Prime Minister would be looking at the issues in more detail, and as we had said, Hilary Armstrong would be publishing the new social exclusion action plan in a couple of weeks.
